Roof Repair and Maintenance: Battling Winter Weather

Snowy roof top Here in the Pacific Northwest we experience all types of unpredictable weather. The winter months are often when we have the most severe conditions, and this could mean trouble for your roof. If you are starting to notice parts of your roof wearing down from weather, look into roof repair and maintenance to prevent harsh weather conditions from damaging your home.

This time of year we see rainstorms, strong winds, ice, and even the occasional snowstorm. Each weather condition brings a chance of damage happening to your roof, and if not taken care of, it will lead to bigger problems as the spring showers start to roll in.

When snowstorms and ice hit, there are various problems that can occur in your roof from the excess moisture. Depending on the type of roof, you might see cracked tile or portions of the roof curing back, leaving your home vulnerable to leaks. Condensation is also a consequence of exceptionally cold weather, which can cause mold to grow in the attic and parts of the ceiling.

Strong winds, although not particularly common, can be devastating to roofs in the Pacific Northwest. We live in an area surrounded by trees, and as the wind blows branches, leaves, and other debris toward our homes. Our roofs are put at risk for damage. Large debris falling against a roof can create immediate damage and holes in the roof that will result in leaks.

There are some effects from weather that aren’t as immediate, but will impact your roof over time. Leaky skylights for example, often occur because the seal of the skylight has been broken down by bad weather. Gutters are also a victim of long-term weather effects such as debris from wind and rainstorms. Both weather systems tend to back gutters up.

It’s important to manage all of these issues before they get out of hand. Roof repair and maintenance throughout the winter will save you a lot of headaches as spring approaches, because as anyone in the Northwest knows, there will be rain.
